Mr Lee Chin Chuan, 50, a Singaporean, is said to have arrived on the Indonesian island on Saturday and rented a room at the Newton Hotel and Spa located in the main town of Nagoya.
The head of the Lubuk Baja police station in Nagoya, First Police Inspector Hendrianto, spoke to The New Paper on Monday and said that Mr Lee had hooked up with a woman at one of the nightspots in the area before they made their way to his hotel room.
"Mr Lee later downed two cans of beer, but shortly afterwards, he clutched his heart and went into convulsions," said the policeman in Bahasa Indonesia.
"It's highly likely that he had a heart attack."
Indonesian newspaper Posmetro reported that it was believed that Mr Lee's bag contained what was referred to as "strengthening medicine".
The paper also reported that items which looked like sex toys were found in the bag.
However, when queried by TNP, Inspector Hendrianto said that he could not confirm these allegations.
"All I can say is that (Mr Lee) was taken to the Budi Kemuliaan hospital nearby where he was pronounced dead," he said.
