Fierce clashes in Yemen; fate of Saleh uncertain

(CNN) -- The fiercest clashes since anti-government demonstrations began in Taiz four months ago erupted overnight Monday between anti-government gunmen and members of government security forces, witnesses said.

They cited heavy gunfire near the Republican Palace, which is less than two miles from the city's Freedom Square, where tens of thousands of anti-government protesters had taken to the streets. The witnesses did not want to be identified, citing fear for their safety.

The goal of the anti-government gunmen was to protect the anti-government demonstrators, who have repeatedly come under fire from security forces during the past two months. Last week, Yemen's government faced condemnation from the United Nations and others for the killing of as many as 50 anti-government demonstrators in Taiz.

The unrest came shortly after Saudi state-run Ekhbariya television reported Monday that Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh had undergone two operations in Saudi Arabia and would return to Yemen after he recovers. Saleh is in Saudi Arabia for treatment following a rocket attack on his presidential compound on Friday.

There were conflicting reports about his health, with Western diplomatic sources saying Sunday that Saleh was undergoing brain surgery, while a spokesman for his party described the procedures as "simple checkups."

A senior U.S. official said Saleh had suffered shrapnel wounds and severe burns to his face and chest, adding that the severity of the wounds was not clear. The official declined to be named due to the sensitivity of the situation.

Another U.S. official told CNN Monday afternoon that Saleh had suffered serious injuries. "It's not an insignificant wound; he is severely hurt," the official said.

The official did not have an update on Saleh's prognosis, but did say it was "unclear if and when" he would be able to return to Yemen. He's "under a lot of political pressure," the official said.

The official added that Acting President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi is "probably not a long-term player, but (is) a caretaker for the regime," although he could become a post-Saleh candidate in any future elections.
The official pointed out that some tribes have honored Hadi's call for a cease-fire. "He carries some weight" in running the government, the official said of Hadi.

The official said the Yemeni military was behind the government, but the source would not predict if that would last.

The official acknowledged that al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, also known as AQAP, had enjoyed free rein in certain parts of Yemen even before the current unrest. They probably have "slightly more free rein now," the official said.

According to the official, AQAP was trying to take advantage of the current situation. The organization has said it opposes the Saleh government and would like to see it collapse. AQAP will try to establish a foothold in other areas of Yemen -- either alone or allied with others, the official said.

The group has a significant presence in the southern province of Abyan, also home to an Islamic militant movement that has targeted government troops for the past three days. The militants killed four soldiers and five civilians Monday in the city of Zinjibar, the scene of several recent battles with Yemeni forces, according to a security source in Abyan, who has asked not to be named as he is not authorized to speak to the media.
Another 17 people, most of them civilians, were wounded in the clashes, the security official said. And a total of 10 government troops died in Saturday and Sunday ambushes in Abyan, a senior Interior Ministry official told CNN.

The U.S. official called AQAP "a small group," although "a potent force". "There are not thousands of them," the official said, referring to the situation with AQAP as "a scale factor." It's questionable whether they can mount a sizable opposition, but they could influence the political and military situation in Yemen, the official said.

The official said the unrest makes it "more difficult" for U.S. counterterrorism efforts in Yemen. "We rely on the Yemeni government as partners. The more the government is distracted by the political unrest, the more difficult it is for us."

The Yemeni government has had a "big impact on acquiring information on AQAP," said the official, adding, "if that information flow slows or stops, it inhibits our ability to gather information." The official would not comment on whether the instability is an opportunity for the United States to take more aggressive actions in Yemen.

White House press secretary Jay Carney said Monday that one of President Barack Obama's top security advisers, John Brennan, has spoken to the acting president in Yemen. No details of the discussion were provided.

Two opposition leaders in Yemen expressed support Monday for Hadi, the vice president who
assumed temporary power when Saleh flew to Saudi Arabia. "We do not have any problem if Hadi takes control of the government. He is respected by the people," said Tawakkul Karman, adding that Hadi "must use this historic moment to enter Yemen's history as a leader and revolutionary."

But she warned that if he does not "conduct immediate reforms, the youth protesters will go against him the same way they did against Saleh. It's Hadi's choice to decide which door of history he wants to go through."
Ahmed Bahri, a senior official of the opposition Joint Meeting Parties, said that if Hadi can lead peaceful change, "we welcome it. If not, he should step aside and not stall the revolution."

"Hadi has been respected by all the political factions for decades, but Saleh did not give him a chance to lead positive change," Bahri said. "Today is his opportunity to repay the Yemeni people for their patience and work for the sake of the people and not for Saleh."

In other violence Monday, three Hashed tribesmen were killed by Yemeni government snipers despite a cease-fire between the sides, a spokesman for the tribe's leader said. The cease-fire was agreed upon late Sunday between Hashed leader Sadeq Al-Ahmar -- who opposes the Yemeni government -- and Vice President Hadi, said Abdulqawi Al-Qaisi, spokesman for the Hashed leader.

He blamed Yemen's Republican Guard for the tribesmen's deaths in the Yemeni capital of Sanaa.
"The tribes are insistent that the cease-fire continues, but the Republican Guard wants chaos as usual to show the people that, without Saleh, clashing will take place everywhere," Al-Qaisi said.

But the government denied being behind the deaths.
"The government does not attack people who are not going against the law," government spokesman Abdu Ganadi said. "These are claims from the tribes in order to cause more crimes in Sanaa."

Supporters of Al-Ahmar are suspected in the Friday attack on the Yemeni presidential compound. Yemen's state-run news agency SABA, citing a source in Saleh's office, reported last week that three guards and an imam were killed.

Yemeni security forces shelled Al-Ahmar's home on Friday in response to the attack, leaving 10 people dead and 35 others wounded, according to Fawzi Al-Jaradi, an official with the Hashed tribal confederation.
The cease-fire deal followed two weeks of clashes between government and tribal forces in Yemen, where thousands of protesters have been pressuring Saleh to give up power since January.
The fighting erupted when Saleh balked at a deal with the opposition that would have eased him out of office in 30 days.

Yemen's largest opposition bloc had vowed to prevent Saleh from returning.

"The Yemeni people will do all in their power to not allow Saleh to re-enter the country," JMP spokesman Mohammed Qahtan said Sunday.

Taarifa kutoka Arusha ambako kesi ya kiongozi huyo inatarajiwa kuendelea leo asubuhi zinaeleza kuwa polisi jana jioni waliendesha msako wa wanachama wa Chadema waliokuwa wakihamasishana kuhudhuria kwa wingi katika Mahakama ya Hakimu Mkazi wa Arusha.

Wanachama na mashabiki hao wa Chadema walidai kwamba kitendo cha kukamatwa kwa kiongozi huyo wa kambi ya upinzani bungeni ni mpango uliobuniwa na CCM wa kubinya demokrasia ya vyama vingi nchini.

Mbowe na Naibu Katibu Mkuu wa chama hicho Bara, Zitto Kabwe walikamatwa katika maeneo tofauti nchini juzi. Wakati Mbowe alidaiwa kutotii amri ya mahakama, Zitto alidaiwa kuzidisha muda wakati wa kuhutubia mkutano wa hadhara mkoani Singida.

“Tumeongea na polisi, bado wanamng'ang'ania Mbowe. Msimamo wao ni kumpeleka Arusha, tuangalie utaratibu utakaotumika katika kumsafirisha,” alisema Mkurugenzi wa Mambo ya Nje wa Chadema, John Mnyika.

Baada ya kauli hiyo ya Mnyika ambaye pia ni Mbunge wa Ubunge, vijana wa chama hicho wakiongozwa na Diwani wa Kata ya Ubungo, Boniface Jacob walianza kuimba nyimbo za kulaani kukamatwa kwa mwenyekiti wao huku wakisema muziki wa Chadema polisi hawauwezi.

Ofisa mmoja mwadamizi wa Polisi Ilala ambaye hakujitambulisha jina aliwaambia vijana hao kuwa polisi  walishakubaliana na viongozi wa Chadema kuwa mtuhumiwa huyo amepangiwa utaratibu wa kusafirishwa kwenda Arusha kuhudhuria kesi yake.Ofisa huyo aliwataka wananchi waliokuwa kwenye eneo hilo kuondoka ili kupisha jeshi hilo kuendelea na kazi ya kutoa huduma kwa watu wengine.

“Tumeshaongeza na wakubwa wenu, hiki ni kituo cha polisi watu mbalimbali wanakuja kupata huduma hapa. Mtu haji kuangaliwa kwa aina hii ya hamasa na nyimbo, tunaomba muondoke,” alisema ofisa huyo.Kauli hiyo ilipingwa na vijana hao wakisema ofisa huyo ni mtu wa kawaida hawezi kuwaeleza mambo kama hayo.

“Sisi hapa tuna viongozi wetu mambo kama hayo tungeelezwa na kuelewa kama yangesemwa nao na si mtu wa kawaida kama wewe,”alisikika mmoja wa wanachama hao akisema kwa sauti.

Kauli hiyo ilimshangaza ofisa mwingine wa polisi aliyeibuka na kuhoji: “Mnasema huyu ni mtu wa kawaida? Akajibiwa “ndiyo”, “huyo siyo mtu wa kawaida."Vijana hao waliendelea na msimamo wao: “Sisi tunasema huyo ni mtu wa kawaida kwa sababu siyo kiongozi wetu, ndiyo maana tunasema angekuwa kiongozi wetu tungemwelewa.”

Kauli hiyo ilimlazimisha Kamanda wa Polisi Mkoa wa Ilala, Faustine Shilogile kujitokeza na kuwataka watu hao kuondoka katika eneo hilo kwa sababu kulikuwa na shughuli mbalimbali zilizokuwa zikiendelea.

“Tumeongea na viongozi wenu, tumeshakubaliana tunawaomba mtawanyike na sisi tuendelee na kazi, sitaki mkusanyiko wowote katika kituo cha polisi,” alisema Shilogile. Mara baada ya kauli hiyo gari la maji ya kuwasha lilianza kusogea walipokuwa wafuasi hao wa Chadema likitanguliwa na Polisi wa Kutuliza Ghasia waliokuwa wakiwafukuza katika eneo hilo.

Kundi hilo liliondoka na kuelekea makao makuu ya Chadema ambako Katibu Mkuu wa chama hicho, Dk Willibrod Slaa alikuwa na mkutano na waandishi wa habari.

Msimamo wa Kamanda Kova
Akizungumzia mvutano huo, Kamanda wa Polisi Kanda Maalumu ya Dar es Salaam, Suleiman Kova alisema jeshi lake haliwezi kumwachia Mbowe kwa sababu wanaheshimu amri ya Mahakama.

Kova aliwaambia waandishi wa habari jana kwamba jeshi hilo lilipokea amri ya Mahakama ya Hakimu Mkazi Arusha ya kumkamata kiongozi huyo wa Chadema na kwamba hawaruhusiwi kuhoji lolote juu ya amri hiyo.

“Sisi kama jeshi la Polisi tumepokea amri ya mahakama ya kumtia hatiani Mheshimiwa Mbowe na hatuna mamlaka ya kumwachia huru hadi mahakama itoe amri ya kumwachia,”alisema.

Alisema sheria hairuhusu kuhoji sababu za amri inayotolewa na mahakama na kufafanua kuwa hizo ni sheria zilizotungwa na wabunge wenyewe. Alisema Mbowe anatarajiwa kusafirishwa chini ya ulinzi wa Polisi kwenda mkoani Arusha kujibu kesi inayomkabili na kwamba taratibu zote za safari tayari zimekamilika.

“Tunachokifanya ni maagizo ambayo yametoka ngazi ya juu kuhusu suala hili kwa hiyo Mbowe atapelekwa Arusha chini ya ulinzi wa polisi muda wowote kuanzia sasa alimradi awahi muda wake wa mahakama,”alisema Kova.

Alisema atapelekwa Arusha chini ya ulinzi wa polisi kwa sababu amekiuka masharti yake ya dhamana na kwamba tayari wamezungumza na baadhi ya viongozi wa vyama vya upinzani waliokwenda kumuona kiongozi huyo wa kambi ya upinzani bungeni jana.

Kova alisema kulingana na taratibu na sheria za Tanzania, mahakama ikitoa amri hakuna mtu anayeweza kuipinga.

Aliwataka wananchi watulie na kuipa fursa mahakama itekeleze sheria zilizotungwa na Bunge. Akizungumzia kukamatwa kwa Mbowe, Mnyika alisema hizo ni njama za kuudhalilisha upinzani na pia mbinu za kumtaka Mbunge huyo wa Hai asihudhurie kwenye Kikao cha Bunge la Bajeti.

“Endapo watashindwa kutumia busara za mazungumzo tuliyoyafanya kumwachia Mbowe, jambo hili tutalirudisha kwa wananchi na nguvu ya umma itatumika kusuluhisha tatizo hilo,” alisema.

Alisema amani ni tunda la haki lakini inaweza kupotea kama haki haitatendeka na kuongeza kuwa kuna watu ambao wanashutuma nzito za ufisadi, lakini hawachukuliwi hatua zozote isipokuwa viongozi wa upinzani.

Dk Slaa alisema kesi zinazowakabili viongozi wa chama hicho na wabunge wa vyama vya upinzani vinalifedhehesha Bunge la Tanzania kimataifa.

“Ili mtuhumiwa akamatwe sheria iko wazi, notisi zilitakiwa kutolewa kwa mdhamini wake na pia kwa wakili, lakini kwa Mbowe haikuwa hivyo na hiyo inaonyesha ni agizo kutoka mahali Fulani,” alidai.

“Polisi mkoa wa Mwanza wametuma barua kwa Katibu wa Bunge kuomba kibali cha kwenda kumhoji Mbunge wa Jimbo la Busega, Dk Titus Kamani, iweje kwa wabunge wa upinzani kukamatwa bila utaratibu? Alihoji Dk Slaa.

Alisema kutokana na mazingira hayo kama Mbowe hatafikishwa leo mahakamani wabunge wa Chadema hawataingia bungeni.

Kuhusu uwakilishi kwenye kamati ya uongozi alisema hata kama Zitto atakuwa nje ya mahabusu, hataingia kuwakilisha upinzani kwa sababu anayetakiwa kumpa kibali cha kufanya hivyo yupo ndani.

Kuhusu kosa la Zitto kukamatwa na polisi alisema inashangaza kwa sababu alikuwa kwenye mkutano wa hadhara kama mbunge na alizidisha dakika 20 kwenye mkutano huo.

Alisema hiki siyo kipindi cha kampeni na Zitto ni kiongozi mwenye haki ya kufanya hivyo na kusisitiza kilichofanyika kimelenga kufifisha demokrasia nchini.

Yemen president hurt in shelling of palace

SANAA, Yemen — Yemen's President Ali Abdullah Saleh was injured, four of his guards killed and the speaker of parliament left in critical condition after the presidential palace was hit by shells on Friday, Al Arabiya TV reported. 

The prime minister, Ali Muhammad Mujawar, and the deputy prime minister, Rashad al-Oleime, were also hurt in the attacks as street fighting between Saleh's forces and a tribal federation widened on Friday in the capital Sanaa, the report said.

A TV station run by the country's opposition, called Suhail, reported that Saleh had been killed in the attack, but this was denied by government officials.
"The president is well and he will address the people in one hour, there are some slight injuries among officials," Abdu al-Janadi, deputy information minister, said.


Yemeni sources told NBC News that the president suffered a minor neck injury while praying in a mosque within the presidential compound and would hold a press conference soon.

They said al-Oleime had "serious injuries" and that Mujawar had sustained minor injuries.

Mahakama yaamuru Mbowe akamatwe

 MAHAKAMA ya Hakimu Mkazi Arusha, imetoa amri ya kukamatwa kwa Mwenyekiti wa Chadema, Freeman Mbowe popote alipo na kufikishwa mahakamani hapo kwa kile kilichoelezwa kuwa ni kutotii amri ya kufika mahakamani hapo. Mahakama hiyo pia imemtaka mdhamini wa Mbowe aliyetajwa kwa jina la Julius Isaya Magwe, kufika mahakamani hapo mara moja ili kuieleza mahakama hiyo sababu za kutotii amri ya mahakama pale anapohitajika.

Hakimu Mkazi wa mahakama hiyo, Charles Magesa alisema jana kuwa kimsingi Mahakama inakubaliana na hoja ya wakili upande wa Serikali kuitaka mahakama kutoa amri ya kukamatwa kwa Mbowe kwa sababu ya kutotii amri ya kufika mahakamani au kumtuma mdhamini wake. Alisema sababu iliyotolewa mahakamani hapo kwamba mshtakiwa huyo ni mbunge na yupo kwenye vikao vya Kamati za Bunge haina uzito kwa kuwa hiyo ni moja ya shughuli zake kama ilivyo shughuli nyingine kwa watumishi wa serikali.

“Hivyo basi kama ni shughuli zake za kawaida, haimzuii kutii amri ya mahakama pale anapoitwa bila kujali anaitiwa nini,” alisema Magesa. Hakimu Magesa alisema kuwa anachokumbuka ni kwamba Mahakama hiyo kweli ilipokewa maelezo ya kuwa washtakiwa hawatahudhuria mahakamani hapo Mei 27 mwaka huu kwa sababu ya kuwa katika vikao vya Kamati za Bunge na kuagiza waje wadhamini wao siku kesi inapotajwa. Ndiyo sababu Mbunge wa Rombo, Joseph Selasini alimpeleka mdhamini wake mahakamani hapo.

Lakini, kabla ya kuhitimisha agizo hilo, hakimu huyo, awali alitoa amri ya kutaka kukamatwa kwa Mbunge wa Moshi Mjini, Philimon Ndesamburo, ambaye naye hakutii amri ya mahakama kwa kutofika Mei 27, 30 na 31 na hata jana.

Hata hivyo, baada ya kutoa amri ya kukamatwa kwa Ndesamburo ambaye naye ni mshtakiwa, ghafla alijitokeza mdhamini wake, Rubeni Ngowi na kuiambia mahakama hiyo kuwa alikuwapo Mei 30, ila hakuweza kusogea mbele kwa sababu ya woga wa mahakama na kwa kuwa hakuitwa. Baada ya maelezo hayo, Hakimu Magesa alimhoji mdhamini huyo akitaka kujua alikuwa wapi Mei 27 mwaka huu kesi hiyo ilipotajwa. Ngowi alijitetea kuwa alikwenda jijini Dar es Salaam kwa familia yake ambayo ilikuwa ina matatizo, lakini Mei 30 alifika mahakamani hapo na kuomba kuondoa amri hiyo ya kukamatwa kwa mshtakiwa wake.

“Basi kwa sababu nakumbuka ulikuwapo Mei 30 na nilikuona hapa mahakamani ukimnong’oneza wakili Kimomogoro, basi naondoa amri hii. Ila naomba utii amri ya mahakama pale mshtakiwa anapokosa uje kutoa sababu za kukosa kwake,” alisema Magesa.

Hakimu Magesa pia alitoa onyo kwa washtakiwa wengine wakiongozwa na Dk Willibrod Slaa wasiache kufika mahakamani, kila siku kesi yao inapotajwa na pale wanapokuwa na sababu ya kutofika, wahakikishe wadhamini wao wanakuwapo kutoa sababu za kukosekana kwao.

Akitoa uamuzi wa hatima ya dhamana za washtakiwa wa kesi inayowakabili viongozi wa Chadema, Godbless Lema, Joseph Selasini na wafuasi wao, Hakimu Mkazi Magesa, alisema Mahakama hiyo imeondoa hati ya kukamatwa kwa washtakiwa hao kama ilivyoamriwa awali na kutupilia mbali ombi la wakili wa serikali la kutaka wafutiwe dhamana.

Alisema kuwa kutokana na kupitia kwa makini maelezo ya utetezi wa pande zote mbili kwa Wakili wa Serikali, Edwin Kakolaki na wakili upande wa utetezi, Medhod Kimomogoro, Mahakama hiyo imeamua kuwapatia dhamana ya kudumu washtakiwa ambao ni Dk Slaa na wenzake, kwa kutii amri ya Mahakama.

“Mahakama hii imeamua kufuta amri ya dhamana ya muda na kuacha dhamana ya awali kwa sababu mara mahakama hii ilipotoa amri ya kuwakamata Mei 27 mwaka huu, washtakiwa hao walifika mahakamani hapa kujisalimisha wenyewe na wengine, akiwamo Mbunge Joseph Selasini, alituma mdhamini wake, hivyo nawaachia dhamana zao,” alisema Magesa.

Kesi hiyo ilifunguliwa na Serikali, Januari 5 mwaka huu ambapo washtakiwa 19 walifikishwa mahakamani hapo na kusomewa shtaka la kufanya kusanyiko pasipo na kibali na kutoa maneno ya uchochezi. Washtakiwa walikana makosa yao na kwa sasa wako nje kwa dhamana hadi Juni 24 mwaka huu kesi hiyo itakapotajwa tena.

Akizungumza na Mwananchi jana jioni, Mbowe alisema anatarajia kutoa tamko kuhusu suala hilo leo saa tano asubuhi jijini Dar es Salaam, lakini alikataa kutaja ni wapi mkutano wake na waandishi wa habari utafanyika.

“Nitatoa tamko kesho, lakini nasikitishwa na tafsiri hii ya Mahakama kwamba mimi nimekaidi amri ya kufika katika vikao vya mahakama. Nasema hivyo kwa sababu mara ya mwisho tulipokuwa mahakamani, tulipewa ruhusa ya kuhudhuria vikao vya Kamati za Bunge,” alisema Mbowe na kuongeza:
“Sasa sijui tafsiri yake ni nini, lakini niseme tu kwamba haya yote kuhusu sakata la Arusha na amri za polisi kuwakamata wabunge wa opposition (upinzani) nitalizungumza kesho (leo) kwa vyombo vya habari”.

Kwa mujibu wa Mbowe, waliomba ruhusa ili kuwawezesha kushiriki vikao vya Kamati za Bunge kutokana na umuhimu wa masuala ya bajeti kwa umma ambayo pia yanawagusa mahakimu na Idara ya Mahakama kwa jumla.

“…hebu kama mnakumbuka, katika Bunge lililopita tulijadili ule muswada wa sheria unaogusa idara ya mahakama sisi wabunge wa upinzani tulitumia nguvu kubwa kuwatetea mahakimu katika mambo mengi. Sasa katika suala hili la bajeti si vizuri tukikosekana kwenye vikao na ndiyo maana tuliomba ruhusa siku ile na tukaruhusiwa, ”alisema Mbowe.

Owner angry her 4 dogs were shot

OVERLAND PARK, Kansas - It has been a tough road to recovery for a German Shepherd dog named Hugo. He has been in the hospital for about a month after being shot.
“Unfortunately for Hugo, his entire hip was shattered," said her owner,  Julie Bernet. "They had to go in and put a plate in his hip along with 13 screws."

Bernet is a dog breeder and she specializes in training “working dogs.” Many of her German Shepherds are hired for search and rescue missions and other service positions. Hugo was one of four of her dogs shot recently. Her award-winning border patrol dog Goody was also shot and died of his injuries.
"A dog is still a living being. To many people it is considered like their children," Bernet said.. "I do not know that I will ever be the same after this experience. Luckily, I still have Hugo and Ian but I will never be able to replace Goody.”

Authorities are investigating but said this may be a case of “he said – she said.” Bernet said her neighbor shot the dogs but the sheriff’s office said they got a report the dogs were threatening the neighbor’s livestock.
“If they go outside of that property and they are posing a threat to people or livestock or other animals, then that property owner has the right to defend themselves against the dog,” said Deputy Erickson with the Johnson County Sheriff's Office.

Bernet said since she went public with her story she has received hundreds of letters from people outraged at the situation.

"With any story there is one side, a second side and the truth in the middle and that is part out what we are doing and looking into as we investigate this,” said Erickson.

Hugo’s medical bills are in the thousands but he will survive.

Officials said this is a tough case.

Sex Scandal: Parents react to lawsuit against Ratigan, Diocese

KANSAS CITY, Missouri - Parents of a young girl are suing the Kansas City-St. Joseph Catholic Diocese while others applaud the move.

The lawsuit, which will be filed Thursday, accuses the diocese, Bishop Robert Finn and Father Shawn Ratigan of a cover-up.Ratigan, currently in the Clay County Detention facing possession of child pornography charges, now faces a lawsuit along with his former employer.

“I’m not shocked because it seems like they were hiding a lot of things and now things are coming out,” said Thu Meng, a parent whose child attends St. Patrick’s School, where Ratigan was once assigned. The lawsuit comes from the parents of a 7-year-old girl. Lawyers, in a release, said the girl is a victim. Those lawyers said Ratigan, while working for a church in Easton, Missouri, took pictures of the girl when she was 2- or 3-years-old. The suit alleges Ratigan and Bishop Robert Finn, trying to avoid a church scandal, concealed sexually inappropriate photos found on Ratigan’s computer.

When asked for their opinions about the matter, parents leaving St. Patrick’s School did not mince words Wednesday.
“Good for them (the parents filing the lawsuit),” said Matthew Copple, a parent at the school. “The diocese needs to be held accountable.”
“I hope that the diocese is forced to change everything around, their policies, procedures, everything,” Meng said.
“The teachers here obviously saw something going on and tried to get something done about it and the diocese was silent,” Copple said.

That changed last week when a letter from the St. Patrick’s School principal surfaces. It detailed numerous allegations against Ratigan, even saying he “fit the profile of a child predator.” Members of the bishop’s staff knew about the letter for a year. However, they did nothing. Friday, Bishop Finn apologized.
“I have to change,” Bishop Finn said.
His words could not stop one lawsuit. However, St. Patrick’s parents hope the diocese response changes everything.

11-year-old Syrian girl is shot dead by troops, human rights activist says 

Shelling by Yemen's Republican Guard and pre-dawn street battles between government forces and rival tribal fighters killed at least 41 people in the capital Wednesday. 

Meanwhile in Syria, at least eight people, including an 11-year-old girl, were killed over two days when Syrian troops shelled a town in the country's south, a human rights activist said.

Fighting in Yemen raged until 5 a.m. local time Wednesday (10 p.m. ET Tuesday). Witnesses said Presidential Guard units shelled the headquarters of an army brigade responsible for guarding sensitive government institutions.
