Coloured chicks: Cute or cruel?

Chicken eggs are being injected with dye in order to produce vibrantly-coloured chicks upon hatching.
Further findings revealed an online video of someone who had a similar encounter with the multi-coloured chicks, and these chicks are said to be commonly sold by street vendors in China, India, Malaysia, Morocco, Yemen, and even the US.

Questions of animal cruelty have arisen as a result of the embryos being injected with dye while still developing within the egg, as dyes consist of hydrogren peroxide and ammonia. Food colouring could also be used, but while it is harmless for humans, it might not be the same for chicks. Many have been intoxicated and have died before hatching.

However, the colour is not permanent. As the chicks grow, undyed feathers will replace the coloured ones, causing the birds to lose their visual appeal, and therefore running the risk of being discarded by their owners.
