Facebook keeps deleted user data

Facebook is facing a possible US$138,000 fine for keeping data that was deleted by users.
A report in UK newspaper The Guardian said the case was discovered after a 24-year-old Austrian law student, Max Schrems, requested that Facebook send him a copy of all his personal data.
Facebook sent him a CD containing 1,200 pages of data, including his "friend" and "de-friend" history, and chat sessions.
Schrems discovered that the data returned to him was information that he had deleted from his profile. However, the data was still kept by Facebook.

Schrems then decided to launch an online campaign to force the social media network to adhere to Europe's data privacy laws.

The complaints listed on his site "Europe vs. Facebook" include his example of how Facebook kept deleted user data, and also highlights shortcomings in Facebook's Terms of Services.
The law student also argues that Facebook retains information for much longer than allowed under European law.

Europeans, especially Germans, have voiced concerns before about data privacy, especially Internet marketing practices where consumers are observed, analysed and harvested for profit, with little regard for their privacy.

A spokesperson for Facebook's Irish office said a formal investigation has been launched into Mr Schrems' complaints, and an audit of Facebook's Irish operations will be conducted.

Zitto azushiwa kifo, Mbunge mwingine hoi

Mwakyembe amelishwa sumu.

Gaddafi’s last 21 days

Former Libyan strongman, Muammar Gaddafi
By Zheng Kaijun and Zhu Xiaolong
Sirte. Former Libyan strongman, Muammar Gaddafi, was a terrified fugitive who spent his last days in humbleness. Emerging details show how Gaddafi –whose flamboyant lifestyle marked him out among his peers, was forced to live without usual comfort, sleeping and eating on the floor.Days before he was flushed out of a roadside tunnel and dragged to his death, witnesses said the former ruler was gripped with fear. The fear and humbleness were things he had not experienced for over four decades that he ruled Libya.

"This is where Muammar Gaddafi was hiding for the last three weeks of his life," a local resident, who identified himself as Munsif, said when he led a group of Xinhua reporters to a double-floor house in the coastal town of Sirte, Gaddafi's hometown.

The house, numbered 24 in the Salahdin Street in northern Sirte, is located in a neighborhood of relatively wealthy people in the city. But months of battles have left the city, where Gaddafi was born in 1942, completely in ruins, with all types of shell cases visible on the city roads and literally every single building damaged.

Not long after Gaddafi took power and became Libya's top figure in 1969, he implemented extensive programmes to expand his hometown village into a city, which he later even wished to become the centre for a "United States of Africa." But during his last days, it became a place for himself.

The Libyan ex-leader, rather than running into the southern desert or seeking refuge in neighbouring countries, as many had predicted, opted to stay in his birthplace until his "mysterious" death after he was captured alive by fighters of the now ruling National Transitional Council (NTC) on October 20.

"Gaddafi was moving with his close guards from place to place within this district, but this was where he spent his last three weeks," Munsif said, opening the gate of the house and then the door to the living room, where about twenty dirty mattresses and empty bottles of water were scattered around.

Despite Gaddafi's conventional defiance towards the end of his life, as suggested by his voice recordings broadcasted by a Syria-based channel, he was certainly living in humbleness and fear that he had not experienced for over four decades.
Several windows of the room were warded off by metal sheets, in a bid to avoid pryers and bullets.

Munsif told Xinhua that Gaddafi would not go outside the murky room while only his chef would make meals for him in a makeshift kitchen in the yard, which was covered by a steel ceiling.

In the last several weeks, about 200 snipers were stationing on rooftops of buildings around Gaddafi's shelter. On occasions, they could resist the heavy offensives from the NTC fighters, and that could prolong Gaddafi's life for another day, Munsif and his friends, who lived around, said.

However, as the NTC and NATO started to narrow down the scope of attacks last week, Gaddafi was compelled to flee. Some one kilometer from his shelter, a fleet of cars are scattered in ashes following the alleged NATO bombardments on Oct. 20, as well as some dozens of dead bodies which are already decomposing and attracting swarms of flies. "They are all the African mercenaries of Gaddafi," said a man in mask, medical gloves and anti-virus coat, who was collecting the corpse onto a truck. "They were killed last Thursday by bombs, before Gaddafi was killed," said the man who requested for anonymity.

According to earlier reports, Gaddafi's car managed to escape the shells, and he later hid into a twin-hole drainage tunnel about only 100 meters away. The holes, less than one meter in diameter, could not afford a standing man, while even sitting inside would be an uncomfortable posture. Considering that the tunnels -- about less than 15 meters long - - are open at both ends, it was almost impossible for Gaddafi to escape.

6 quizzed over Mwakyembe 'poisoning'

Deputy minister for Works, Dr Harrison Mwakyembe

By Mkinga Mkinga,
The Citizen Reporter
Dar es Salaam. Mysteries surrounding the health condition of the deputy minister for Works, Dr Harrison Mwakyembe, took a new twist as police questioned six people.

The Police launched investigations aiming at establishing whether claims that the deputy Works minister’s illness resulted from deliberate poisoning were true.

Dr Mwakyembe was flown to India about three weeks ago after his health condition deteriorated due to an illness, which was yet to be disclosed neither by him or the doctors treating him.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID), an arm of the Police Force, is said to have decided to dig into the widespread rumours claiming that poisoning could be the cause of Dr Mwakyembe’s illness.

Talking to The Citizen on condition of anonymity because he is not the spokesman of the police, a senior police CID officer said at least six people have been questioned so far.

“Our questioning them does not mean they are suspects, we’re just looking for information to help us create the bigger picture and establish whether there is anything worth pursuing in the rumours,” said the source.

The source said that the Police Force has decided not to ignore the rumours especially because, several months back, Dr Mwakyembe had reported to the law enforcement organ of receiving threats over his life.

He said since April when Dr Mwakyembe reported about the threats, the police has managed to obtain several leads, which he declined to divulge.

He said the deputy minister gave them a list of people whom he was suspecting, therefore, “making it easy for us to have a starting point”.

The deputy director of Criminal Investigations, Samson Kasala, who told a press conference yesterday at the Police Headquarters in Dar es Salaam about investigations on reports that Dr Mwakyembe’s illness resulted from poisoning, confirmed these police activities.

But he said they would also need scientific proofs to make them conclude categorically that the Kyela Member of Parliament was indeed poisoned.

“We want to obtain some scientific proofs from the doctors who attended to or are still attending Dr Mwakyembe. Only then shall we be in a position to take our investigations further,” Mr Kasala said.

Mr Kasala said they would also need to question Dr Mwakyembe himself for them to establish the truth of the matter.

He also said that even though doctors took oaths not to divulge health information to any third parties, the police would look into what the law says when such information is crucial to investigation of a crime.

Mr Kasala said that other security organs would also be involved as more information is sought after. “We cannot rely on mere words only… after justification from medical doctors we’ll be in the better position on how best to continue,” he said.

Dr Mwakyembe was flown to India early this month when his health condition deteriorated following what was reported to be some kind of skin malady.

Among people who have publicly hinted that Dr Mwakyembe might have been poisoned, who is his close ally, was the minister for East African Cooperation and former National Assembly Speaker, Mr Samuel Sitta.

Speaking in an interview with a local television station recently, Mr Sitta said he had never seen a person’s skin disintegrating in the manner in which Dr Mwakyembe’s was doing.

However, Mr Kasala could not say if Mr Sitta was among those interviewed in the course of the investigations.

Hookers get bolder

Vietnamese hookers are getting bolder in the Chinatown area.

A reader of Shin Min Daily News, Mr Lin (46, sales person), told reporters about his recent experience at Chinatown.

He was with his friend at Chinatown when they were approached by hookers.

"That is not a red light district but more and more Vietnamese girls are soliciting for sex there. The authorities should do something about it!" said Mr Lin.

Mr Lin and his friend were smoking at the staircase outside the MRT station when a hooker approached him.

"She was very young and pretty, and could even speak simple Chinese and English. She started chatting with me, then pulled me to a corner and asked me if I was interested (in sex). She was bold and even quoted her price to me."

Mr Lin had to repeatedly reject the woman before he managed to shake off her advances.

Sources say that the hookers tend to dress plainly to avoid enforcement efforts by the authorities. Rather than the usual revealing clothes and mini-skirts, some of the Vietnamese hookers were even seen wearing jeans.

Reporters visited Chinatown and indeed saw groups of Vietnamese women sitting around the MRT station. It is apparent that the women were not in the area to shop or sightsee. Rather, they were observing the crowd to pick their customers.

Many men were also seen stopping in their tracks to check out the women.

Some of the women appear to have regular customers as they would check their phones, then leave for nearby budget hotels.

According to feedback in the past, PRC hookers soliciting for sex with older men used to be a common sight in Chinatown. It seems the PRC women are now losing their turf to the Vietnamese women.

Keeping the 'tease' in a relationship: Dita Von Teese

Dita Von Teese, the queen of burlesque would "like to get married a few more times" because "it's fun to have celebrations of love".
Never mind that her 2005 marriage to pasty shock rocker Marilyn Manson lasted only one year. The prospecting men in her future would have to get used to her "keeping my high heels on during sex".
One of her keynotes is: "It is important to keep the 'tease' in a relationship... to remember that man likes to hunt, so you have to not make yourself so available, so easily.
"I am a very good cook, but I would not readily bake pies and cookies for just any man who comes along.
"Do not give 100 per cent right away to a man who doesn't deserve it yet."

Another body found at Bedok Reservoir

SINGAPORE - Another body has been recovered from Bedok Reservoir this morning, the fifth such incident in just five months.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF), who responded to a call from the public at 7.11am, said the body was found floating about two metres away from shore when they arrived on the scene, just opposite Block 717, Bedok Reservoir Road.
The body belonged to a Chinese female, an SCDF spokesperson added.
Police believe the woman to be in her late 50s. They said she was pronounced dead at the scene by parademics at 7.20am.
A section of the reservoir bank was cordoned off this morning before the body was removed at around 10.30am.

An eyewitness, Mr Yeo Kin Kiat, 53, told AsiaOne that the body was clothed in a red top.
After the recent deaths of Ms Tan Sze Sze, 32, and her three-year-old son, Jerald Chin in September at the same reservoir, some readers suggested that barriers should be put up around the reservoir to deter copycats.

However, a taxi driver at the scene said that erecting barriers may not be a sufficient deterrent. The driver, who only wanted to be known as Mr Lee, 52, told AsiaOne: "People who want to commit suicide will do so regardless of whether there are barriers."

Doctors say more men are embracing plastic surgery

By Amanda Yong and Rennie Whang
WHY so vain?
That's one question Mr Kelvin Quah has often been asked since he went for eye-bag and double eyelid surgery about five months ago.
But Mr Quah, 45, a project director in the construction industry, takes such ribbing in his stride.
"Some of my friends and regular customers will say, 'You're so old already, why do you still want surgery?'" he said.
"But it's okay. There's nothing to be offended about. I know they're just joking."

He said he spent $9,000 on the two procedures done by Dr Chua Jun Jin, a plastic surgeon who runs JJ Chua Rejuvenative Cosmetic and Laser Surgery.
The trend of men going for aesthetic treatments came under the spotlight last week.
