Full-body suits could get you into trouble

You might want to think twice before wearing a full-body spandex suit out to the mall, as you may run afoul of the law, said lawyers my paper spoke to.

Two youths clad in such suits - which covered them from head to toe, and concealed their faces - caused an uproar online when photographs of the pair surfaced on citizen-journalism website Stomp.

The duo were spotted at Causeway Point on July 23, and at Lot One on July 30. A Stomper, who declined to be named, revealed that the two youths were his friends and told my paper that they were inspired to don the suits after seeing cosplayers who had dressed up as a Marvel Comics character, Thor, a few months ago.
One of the spandex-wearing youths, who agreed to an e-mail interview with my paper but declined to be named, said that four people - aged between 18 and 21 - had taken turns to wear the suits to different locations. They were just out "to be funny", he said.

Lawyer Chia Boon Teck, 48, a partner at law firm Chia Wong, said that the youths might be found to be causing intentional harassment, alarm or distress to members of the public, an offence under the Miscellaneous Offences (Public Order and Nuisance) Act.

Mr Foo Cheow Ming, 47, a criminal lawyer at Khattar- Wong, said whether they have broken any laws is open to interpretation.
He said: "I might not find them threatening, but someone else might, so it could be controversial."
When contacted, a police spokesman said: "If a report is lodged, the police will assess if any offence (has been committed) and take action accordingly."
