'Luxurious jails' for China's corrupt officials

China's bureaucrats are famous for enjoying privileged lives, but few expect corrupt bureaucrats to continue their lives of luxury after being caught and put in prison.

Yet some Chinese jails accommodate bureaucrats-turned-criminals with lavish facilities and privileges, according to China Digital Times.

These prisons are fully equipped European-style buildings with upscale bars, exclusive offices, large conference centres, 20 square metre cells (with balconies), stadiums, basketball courts and a manmade river and park.

China's government has created luxury jails for bureaucrats that have been sacked and are nominally set up for the re-education of those that have fallen foul.

Seven luxury prisons have been built in China, according to reports on entertainment news site mop.com.

The jail that has drawn most attention is Yancheng prison in Suzhou city, which boasts six basketball courts.

Among the sacked officials who enjoy a privileged life in prison, is Chen Liangyu, former leader of the Communist party in Shanghai. Chen is entitled to a 20 sq m cell, served four meals a day, which include cigarettes and chocolate.

While in prison, Ma Jianguo (above), a corrupt official from Chengdu, was allowed to attend private dinners, go home to sleep and use his mobile phone whenever he wanted.

One netizen asked, "How can the officials not fall into corruption?"

"Even jails are providing them with five-star services, that is just another way of encouraging corruption."
