S'pore man survives after his car plunges into JB river, but wife dies

JOHOR BARU - A Malaysian woman was killed when the car she was travelling in with her Singaporean husband skidded and plunged into Sungai Pandan here early yesterday.
In the 6.30am incident, the driver lost control of the Toyota Vios that was heading from Kota Tinggi to Singapore.

Johor Baru south district police chief Assistant Commissioner Zainuddin Yaacob said the incident took place at Km9.5 of Jalan Johor Baru-Jalan Kota Tinggi.

The vehicle swerved into the opposite lane before crashing through the bridge railing.
An eyewitness, who only wanted to be identified as Ismail, said he saw the driver, Tan Lay Choon, 49, climbing out of the vehicle after it landed in the river. His wife, Pan Sua Yean, 45, from Seremban, appeared to be unconscious in the vehicle.
Firemen, who received a distress call at 6.36am, reached the scene about 10 minutes later. A team of 23 firemen took two hours to recover the car from the river.
When met at Sultan Ismail Hospital in the afternoon, Tan appeared to be in a daze and did not want to talk to reporters.

He repeatedly asked about his wife's condition and requested to see her.
Tan is self-employed while Pan was a housewife. They have a teenage son.
